Michael Stephens
A fresh voice for The Maidstone & Malling Constituency

Internationalist · Campaigner · Environmentalist

Michael Stephens has spent his working life standing up for liberal values, both at home and abroad. He moved to Maidstone a few months ago and is enjoying getting to know the town, its villages and the people who make this part of Kent such a good place to live.

Michael has a long background in national security and foreign affairs. He has worked for the British Government in some of the most difficult conflict zones in the Middle East, including Palestine and Iraq, and speaks Hebrew and Arabic. He has also served as a Government adviser and lectured at several leading universities. Drawing on that experience, he makes the case for Britain to play a stronger role in upholding international cooperation, the rule of law and human rights.

Michael cares deeply about our natural environment. Much of his career has focused on tackling climate change, including raising tens of millions of dollars to help prevent climate-related diseases from reaching some of the world’s most vulnerable communities. He will be a steady voice for stronger climate action, here in Kent and nationally.

Michael is also an experienced local campaigner. This year he helped the Lib Dems to success in the Tunbridge Wells local elections, and he is now looking forward to helping grow our local party in Maidstone and Malling ahead of the elections in 2027.
