Council Reorganisation "Pause" Leaves Kent in Limbo, Say Local Lib Dems

The Labour Government has confirmed it is pausing local government reorganisation plans for Kent and Medway pending an internal review, rather than proceeding with the timetable previously set out. The announcement, made on 7 September, follows similar interventions in neighbouring counties and leaves the future shape of councils across the county unresolved.

Kent County Council, along with the county's twelve district and borough authorities, has spent months preparing for reorganisation, committing significant officer time and taxpayer-funded resource to the process. Local Liberal Democrats say the pause, rather than providing clarity, has deepened uncertainty for councils and their staff.

Statement from Cllr Clive English, Liberal Democrat Leader on Maidstone Borough Council:

"Let's be clear about what was announced on 7 September: this is a pause for review, not a final decision. That in itself is the problem — it creates even greater uncertainty rather than resolving it.

"Confidence in local government has already taken a battering, and this does nothing to rebuild it. Kent and Maidstone have poured huge amounts of officer time, member time and taxpayer-funded resource into reorganisation planning. A pause doesn't get any of that back."

"Spare a thought for the local government staff caught in the middle of this. They may now have to start replanning their careers and personal lives around a decision that hasn't even been made yet.

"Staying professional and focused on delivering services while your own future is left hanging is an enormous ask, and it's one Whitehall has handed to hard-working council staff with no clear timetable for resolution."
